Yoga is not the inspired or revealed gift of any one person. It evolved over thousands of years in India and was intuitively revealed to sages, seers and rishis when they were in deep meditative states (samadhi). It was collated, co-ordinated and systematized by the sage Patanjali (600 BC), in his classical treatise, the Yoga Sutras, which consist of 185 terse aphorisms (Sutra means thread).

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit ‘yuj’, meaning to bind, attach, yoke, join, to focus one’s attention on, use and apply, union or communion.

When looking at the history of yoga, one cannot ignore the Bhagvad Gita. In the sixth chapter of the Bhagvad Gita, Lord Krishna explains the meaning of Yoga to Arjuna, as deliverance from contact with pain and sorrow. He says, “When his mind, intellect and self (ahamkara) are under control, freed from restless desire, so that they rest in the spirit within, a man becomes a Yukta – one in communion with God. A lamp does not flicker in a place where no winds blow; so it is with a yogi, who controls his mind, intellect and self, being absorbed in the spirit within him. When the restlessness of the mind, intellect and self is stilled through the practice of Yoga, the yogi by the grace of the Spirit within himself finds fulfilment. Then he knows the joy eternal which is beyond the pale of the senses which his reason cannot grasp. He abides in this reality and moves not there from. He has found the treasure above all others. There is nothing higher than this. He who has achieved this shall not be moved by the greatest sorrow. This is the real meaning of Yoga – a deliverance from contact with pain and sorrow.”

Yoga does not believe in excess, but in moderation and is the art of joyfully living in perfect harmony with the self and with Nature It is an attitude of gratitude and constantly thanks and renews its links with the Higher Self and Nature. A yoga practitioner is always in a ‘state of yes’.

In the Kathopanishad, yoga is described as, “When the senses are stilled, when the mind is at rest, when the intellect wavers not – then, say, the wise, is reached the highest stage. This steady control the senses and the mind has been defined as yoga. He who attains it is free from delusion.”

Yoga is being constantly aware that the present moment is inevitable. Yoga is living in the present moment and making each moment – each breath a celebration of life.

There are most people who carry the misconception that yoga is boring. They would do anything to avoid being taught this form of holistic exercise. And when it comes to kids, they are definitely not interested in yoga and need a lot of cajoling. For them it is a static form of physical activity, but the fact is that it is far more dynamic than many can imagine.

In order to lure an increasing number of children yoga trainers and instructors constantly work at creating innovative ways of teaching children yoga. The yoga classes for children are generally entertaining and lots of fun is what most children say. And what makes it fun is the way in which the children are taught.

For instance, a teacher can guide them through an entire session making them laugh and yet exercise. For instance, instead of making them stand in rows and columns, as is done in a typical adult-yoga-batch, the teachers spread the children through the class and take them through a village daily life routine, such as first waking up in the morning, fetching water from the well, cleaning the home, cooking, etc., where in all the postures are done.

Children are extremely flexible, and it is recommended that they attend a class in order to make yoga a way of life. In fact, when the discipline of yoga is made a part of a child’s daily life, they take it into their later stages of life and are less stressed than the average school-attending child.

The following are amongst the simplest asanas that can be taught to children, even the younger ones…

Adho Mukha Svanasana – Downward facing dog
Ardha Sarvangasana – Half Shoulder-stand
Uttanasana Two – Forward bend or extension
Janu Sirhasana – Head to knee stretch
Sukhasana – Cross-legged seated position
Bhujangasana – Cobra pose
Tadasana – Mountain pose
Sethu Bandhasana – Bridge stretch
Virabhadrasana Two – Warrior posture Two
Trikonasana – The triangle pose
Savasana – The corpse stretch

Unless prescribed by the doctor, it is important for a mother to be to be as active as possible. This ensures the birth of a healthy baby, as well as the well being of the mother, especially if the birth is going to be normal. During childbirth the mother’s body goes through trauma.

Though the pain is said to be worth it, yet nonetheless it is extremely painful, causing immense stress on the body. However, according to the medical practitioners, moderate exercises during the nine-month tenure helps in easing out the birth process.

Amongst the recommended exercises is walking and yoga. In fact, yoga postures, stretches and breathing exercises have immense benefits for the pregnant woman. Yoga is a holistic form of exercise, as it has an impact on the mind, body and soul. It gives complete relaxation and calmness. It brings a constant glow to the expectant mother and spreads a sense of well-being, which is vital for the health of the fetus. In fact, if the mother to be follows a yogic way of life, which would not only include practicing the postures and stretches regularly, but also following a proper, healthy diet ensures that post-pregnancy one is back into shape in no time.

While there are a number of books based on yoga postures that one can do at home, yet one should attend pregnancy yoga classes. This is because with help of an instructor, one can be sure that they are performing the stretches and exercises properly, and will be corrected in case of any mistakes.

One should keep in mind that while stretching and doing yoga postures one needs to be very careful, as any error can cause a shift in the position of the fetus, thereby bringing about complications for the not-yet-born-little-one, as we well as for the mother to be.

It is possible for anyone to learn to live serenely and joyfully in the present Age of Anxiety. Within easy reach is a key to live out one’s allotted plan of three-score-and-ten or more, enjoying all the while a vigorous mind in a vigorous body, both of them functioning to their potential. The key to such well being is Yoga.

Here is what an average person coping with just average problems is doubtless up against: The day is too short. One rushes to work in the morning and back home at night, fighting one’s way through crowds and traffic tangles. One works under pressure on the job, or then at home. By the end of the day one is up against more pressure – bills must be paid, expenses budgeted, meals cooked, chores taken care of, etc.

One can learn to cope with all of this by enrolling for beginners yoga classes. At the beginners level one is taught basic asanas or yoga poses, for over all health and mind-body unity. One is taught some basic breathing exercises, along with postures to improve one’s mind-body-soul health. Some classes also prescribe the ideal yogic way of living, providing a prescribed healthy diet to fit into one’s lifestyle.

The beginners classes are meant for all age groups. It is safe. The trainers are well learned and are equipped to guide people to perform those postures that would help them. For instance, one can attend a basic yoga class for back problems, or some people attend a basic course for diabetes, and other related health problems.

Thus, there are target specific classes, as well as general classes. The primary objective is to introduce students to the discipline of yoga so that they can bring into their daily lives a healthy way of living.

The timings are also convenient to suit people from various walks of life. So, while there are morning and evening batches that suit those working, there are the afternoon batches for homemakers. There are very early morning classes for the senior citizens, as well as late evening classes for those who consider work to be an excuse for ignoring their health.

The enthusiast must have faith, discipline and perseverance to practice regularly and most important – be able to breathe! It is for this reason that there are certain prescribed requirements for one to be comfortable while practicing.

Amongst the primary requirements is all that needs to be kept in mind where yoga clothing is concerned. So, the dos for clothing of yoga includes :

Wearing loose clothes
They should be in light pastel shades, preferably white
The clothes should be light
The clothes should be made from natural material

Amongst the other important needs to be kept in mind before practicing yoga postures, one needs to :

Remove footwear
They must not wear spectacles
They should remove wristwatch
One should ideally not wear any jewelry
One should avoid wearing leather belts,
as well as any other leather article
The cell phones should either be switched of,
or then put into silence

Apart from the clothes to be worn, one needs to keep in mind the cloth or mat on which one practices the yoga postures. This cloth is known as the asana. It should ideally be a thick cloth, or optionally, a light blanket that is made from a natural material. This mat is used as it functions as an insulator between the body and the earth. Ideally, one should use the same asana daily. One should avoid any asana that is made from a flimsy or slippery material. One needs to avoid soft and spongy mattresses, as well as those filled with air. This is because such mattresses do not give sufficient support to the spine and could cause injury.

It is advisable that a practitioner begins and develops his asanas practice under the keen and benevolent teaching of a trained teacher. The fact is that no books can replace a teacher. The teacher can at best supplement and complement the practitioner. There are people who attempt yoga teacher training from various sources, or then from the numerous self-learning books. However, while one can learn the asanas, one will not know if they are able to practice the poses correctly.

As every school of yoga would insist – no book can correct a practitioner; and no book can really pep up a practitioner; no book can substitute or replace the magical teaching and lessons of a yoga expert leading one though the flow of each yoga posture. The learning with a trained teacher is not just about corrections and improvisations while practicing asanas, but also the valuable knowledge and wisdom that is passed down to a student.

And for those being trained to become yoga teachers, these valuable snippets of knowledge and wisdom can only enrich an individual’s life. According to tradition, one was usually taught yoga by the Guru of a particular lineage, who primary objective was to ensure that his school of yogic practice is passed down through the ages.

There are romantic versions of how a Guru would present himself in front of his students. According to one version, the yoga trainer would have blazing eyes, which would convey a life changing flash of compassion. To go further, the Guru would be cloaked, hidden and disguised by a soft divine velvet, with the royal glitter of gold and bedazzling glow of silver of a Sat Guru, so that only a true divine disciple, has the strength, wisdom, richness and knowledge no to be taken in by such baubles; but to drink long, thirstily and deeply from the only place he has ever fulfilled a drop of his insatiable thirst – at the oceans paying eternal homage at his Guru’s feet and the millions of suns proclaiming His glories and crowning Him.

According to varied ancient texts, there is no substitute for the grace of a Guru and it is not limited by reasoning or logic. The grace makes the journey easier by gently correcting and guiding the enthusiast at every step of not only the practices but of life also! No book can correct you.

Though today’s yoga Gurus may not be dressed so grandly, the fact is that they are very important, as they today, carry forth the lineage of yoga. They are the one’s who create more yoga trainers, as well as an ever increasing mass of yoga students and enthusiastic practitioners.

There are various forms of yoga that have been practiced by the various yogic traditions. Of them, hatha yoga comprises asanas, pranayamas, mudras and bandhas. Patanjali’s Astanga Yoga (The Eight Fold Path Of Yoga) mentions asanas as the third step, or limb from amongst the eight limbs. It is the most physical and most visual of all the steps. As a matter of fact, whenever a layman talks about, or thinks in terms of yoga, it is the image of practitioner knotted up, with limbs askew at seemingly impossible angles; smilingly practicing and reposing in asanas of Hatha Yoga.

This form of yoga begins with the regeneration, rejuvenation, poise and balancing of pranic energy in both sides of the physical body in the 72,000 naadis (subtle airways), working its way up through the mind. This process guides the prana through the ida and the pingala naadis, easing the prana into the sushumna naadi; thereby stimulating it and liberating the lower individual self, letting it float into the blissful higher self.

The pingala naadi conducts the prana shakti (vital energy), while the ida naadi conducts the manas shakti (mental energy) and activates, optimally, both sides of the brain – the logical and reasoning left brain; as well as the creative and artistic right brain. Most people have a tendency to use one side of their brain (ergo of their body) more than the other side.

Practicing hatha yoga corrects this imbalance and creates poise and equilibrium.

The following are the primary characteristics of the twin conduits for energy have the following chief characteristics:
